How does Nasya treatment control premature greying of hair?

Nasya is one of the group of treatment that ayurveda uses to cleanse the body that comes under the Panchakarma; or five actions or five treatment; techniques. The drugs are administered through the nasal cavity, hence the term Nasya.
But, how does in control premature greying of hair.

In ayurveda, it is believed that any imbalance in the three body elements or doshas;  Vata, Pitta, Kapha; and disequilibrium of the mind and body, can lead to greying of human hair.

Hair loss is called khalitya and premature greying, palitya. They arise from pitta dosha imbalance. This is caused by spicy and oily food which leads to acidity; overexposure to heat and the subsequent excessive sweating.

Nasya is of  five types: Pradhamana, Brumhana, Shamana, Navana and Marshya.

Navana is what we are concerned with as it is used to treat excessive hair fall, increase hair texture and strength. The steps include:

1.Poorvakarma (pre-treatment measures): Oil massage of the face; steam exposure of the face, forehead, head, ears and neck. This is said to help in loosening and eliminating the doshas.
2.Pradhanakarma (main procedure): Slightly warm medicine is gently applied through the nostril, with the help of a dropper. At the same time, the sole of the feet; the palm of the hand; the shoulder, neck and ear are also massaged.
3.Paschatkarma (post treatment/post therapeutic): The mouth is cleaned by gargling with warm water and later the patient is asked to inhale medicated smoke

The medicines; namely: oils of neem, shadbindhu and yashtimadhu; infuse into the circulatory and nervous system, in and around the nostrils, clearing the blockages of the various channels. This impacts on hair quality and strength; which in turn has a great impact on hair loss and greying.

While this treatment is not known to cause any serious side effects, it is usually recommended after a Shirodhara or the gentle pouring of medicinal liquid onto the forehead of the patient, involving a  head massage and relaxing the hypothalamus in the brain.

It starts with ghee intake and oil abhyang followed by vomiting and ends with a restricted diet plan. It is mainly used to extract the Kapha doshas from the body. Cold and cough are caused when Kapha doshas increase. Sometimes medicines can treat ailments, but if Kapha dosha has increased severely, then Vamana has to performed to throw it out of the body completely. Kapha is situated in the chest region and will be easy to remove. After bringing Kapha doshas in the stomach, vomiting is induced. The duration for Vamana is approximately 13-15 days.

Benefits of Vamana

The major benefits of Vamana are as follows:
